Blood donation in North Jersey: Blood drives near you

Thinking of donating blood? Now is as good a time as ever — amid the pandemic, the country continues to experience a shortage of blood supply.

“This year with the pandemic, it’s been a challenge to keep up with the supply,” said Diane Concannon, the communications director for the Red Cross New Jersey region.

Normally, Concannon said, there would be a pickup in blood donations during the fall, but the pandemic has hurt that. An example she used was corporate blood drives, which are not happening as frequently because many workplaces are not fully back in-person.

Earlier this week, RWJBarnabas announced that it was starting a blood drive to combat these shortages. The New York Blood Center, which has donation locations in North Jersey, announced a “blood emergency” on Dec. 1, saying the regional blood supply was at a “1-2-day level, well below the ideal inventory of 5-7 days.”
